The amazing and versatile Cannabis Sativa plant has been used as an herbal remedy for centuries, yes that is correct, hundreds of years.  It is the most abundant source of phytocannabinoids on the planet, and it is where your legal CBD comes from.  The earliest known medically documented use dates back to the Han Dynasty in ancient China where it was used for rheumatic pain, constipation, and disorders of the female reproductive tract.  In traditional Indian Ayurvedic medicine, cannabis was used to treat neurological, respiratory, gastrointestinal, urogenital, and various infectious diseases.  Cannabis was recognized as a medicine in the United States (US) Pharmacopoeia from 1851, in the form of tinctures, extracts and resins until the beginning of the 20th century when they outlawed it and classified it as an illicit drug.  This was mostly due to the fact that big pharma was developing drugs that alleviated the same symptoms as cannabis, so eliminating a naturally grown competitor that was detrimental to profits was necessary for their growth.

Endocannabinoid System (ECS)

Humans on this planet have consumed cannabinoids as nutrition for centuries and we have a system in our bodies called an endocannabinoid system (ECS).  You are probably asking yourself why you have never heard of this despite the fact that there is research going back some thirty plus years that shows evidence of this.  Well, quite frankly, they have been keeping it a secret from us, and we are sure you are asking ‘why’ right now.  You see, it’s simple really, and no this isn’t some conspiracy theory, the fact of the matter is our lovely big pharma and our government holds patents on this stuff and they are protecting their profits.

Cannabinoids help our body reach homeostasis or in layman’s terms, equilibrium.  Cannabinoids are so important to our body that we naturally produce a cannabinoid called Anandamide, as we get older our body makes less of it and it helps if we replace it. (Anandamide blog)  It is so important to our health and well being that it is even found in breast milk for the development of babies.  This leads us to the question we have been asking lately; "Coud we be malnourished?"

CBD & Cancer

These Cannabinoids have been found to interact with our cellular pathways (CB1 & CB2 receptors) discovered in the 1990’s and have a great effect on the development and progression of diseases and cancer.  Cannabinoids when used in palliative care have shown to alleviate pain, relieve nausea, and stimulate appetite.  Numerous cell culture and animal studies showed anti-tumor effects of cannabinoids in various cancer types.

In vitro and in vivo cancer models show that cannabinoids can effectively modulate tumor growth, however, the anti-tumor effects appear to be largely dependent on cancer type and drug dose/concentration.”

In recent years, cannabinoids have been extensively studied for their potential anticancer effects and symptom management in cancer patients.  One of the first studies published in 1975 described the tumor inhibiting activity and properties of cannabinoids.

“The biological role of the ECS in cancer patho-physiology is not completely clear but most studies suggest that CB receptors and their endogenous ligands are up-regulated in tumor tissue and that the over-expression of ECS components (i.e., receptors, ligands, and enzymes) correlates with tumor aggressiveness. However, a tumor-suppressive role of ECS was also indicated by some studies, e.g., the up-regulation of endocannabinoid-degrading enzymes was observed in aggressive human cancers and cancer cell lines.  Moreover, experimental studies showed that the activation of CB receptors by cannabinoids is anti-tumorigenic in most cases, i.e., it inhibits tumor cell proliferation, induces apoptosis in vitro, and blocks angiogenesis and tumor invasion/metastasis in vivo.”

Anti-tumor effects of cannabinoids

Studies suggest that cannabinoids may work by inducing cancer cell cycle arrest by promoting apoptosis (cell death) while helping our bodies build up reserves of our endogenous (natural) cannabinoid production of Anandamide.

“The ability of plant-derived and synthetic cannabinoids to control cancer cell growth, invasion, and death has been demonstrated in numerous experimental studies using cancer cell lines and genetically engineered mouse models. “

CBD has shown in a panel of human prostate cancer cell lines it is a potent inhibitor of cancer cell growth while lowering PSA levels and inflammation in men with prostate cancer.  Other studies are showing that CBD also preferentially inhibits the survival of breast cancer cells by inducing apoptosis and autophagy.

Our thoughts

Research is definitely showing that CBD (cannabinoids) are a promising therapeutic with great potential for treating a variety of diseases including Cancer.  Although cannabinoids have been able to effectively modulate tumor growth in various in vitro and in vivo cancer models, it all depends on the type of cancer and dosage.

At the end of the day, we started this company because we personally experienced the benefits of CBD from reduced inflammation, reduced anxiety, and a tremendously better sleep cycle.  We are trying to spread the word about CBD and we hope you find benefits as well. We will strive to continue educating people about CBD, so if you have a great experience from using CBD please leave you comments below.
